One Month, Five Hustles, Zero Rose-Tinted Specs: Our Honest Verdict

Everyone's got an opinion on side hustles. Very few people have actually done the graft. So we did it for you — five popular UK side gigs, one month each, hours logged, costs tracked, and no cherry-picked screenshots of a bumper Saturday.
The rules were simple: treat each hustle like a real job, track every penny in and out (including fuel, platform fees and kit), and report the hourly rate honestly. If it wouldn't beat minimum wage, we'd say so.
The Contenders
We picked five hustles that come up again and again in UK Facebook groups and TikTok money videos:
- Dog walking via Rover — the 'get paid to cuddle puppies' classic
- Flipping charity shop finds on Vinted — the car boot economy went digital
- Food delivery (Uber Eats / Just Eat) — the default evening gig
- Domestic cleaning — old-school, unglamorous, cash-flowing
- Print-on-demand Etsy shop — the 'passive income' promise
Hustle 1: Dog Walking
Rover made setup painless — profile live in a day, first booking within a week. The catch? You're competing on price in most towns, and a 'walk' often turns into an hour of admin: messages, meet-and-greets, keys, weather cancellations.
The numbers: 14 hours over the month, £186 in bookings, minus roughly £20 in travel. That's about £11.85/hour — decent for something you can do before work, but not the puppy-cuddling holiday the adverts suggest. Dog boarding pays far better than walks, if you've got the space and a landlord who'll allow it.
Hustle 2: Vinted Flipping
We hit charity shops in two nearby towns with a £150 float, hunting branded clothing, vintage denim and anything with a resale market. Vinted's no seller fees is genuinely brilliant — but 'sold' isn't 'paid'. You'll spend real time photographing, listing, messaging time-wasters, packing and queuing at the Evri drop-off.
The numbers: £340 revenue on £150 stock, minus £45 in packaging and travel. Around 22 hours of work total, landing at roughly £6.60/hour. The fix? Specialise. Our best margins came from a single niche (vintage sportswear) rather than general rummaging. Done properly, this one scales — but month one is a grind.
Hustle 3: Food Delivery
Download, sign up, ride. That part's true. So is the reality: you're paid per drop, fuel comes out of your pocket, and Friday and Saturday nights are where the money actually lives.
The numbers: 26 hours, £412 gross, minus £58 in fuel and wear. That's £13.60/hour — one of the better performers, but only because we cherry-picked peak hours in a city centre. Suburban Sunday afternoons were closer to £8/hour before costs. It's flexible and instant, but it's a treadmill: no repeat customers, no compounding, no building anything.
Hustle 4: Domestic Cleaning
The least sexy and most profitable. We took two regular weekly cleans found through local Facebook groups and word of mouth, plus a one-off deep clean.
The numbers: 17 hours, £297, basically no costs beyond products and mileage. That's £17.40/hour — the clear winner. Regular clients mean predictable income, and good cleaners are booked out for months in most UK towns. The barrier is purely psychological: people assume it's beneath them, which is exactly why the rates hold up.
Hustle 5: Print-on-Demand Etsy
The 'passive income' darling. Reality check: there is nothing passive about month one. Designing listings, researching keywords, mockups and Etsy SEO ate an entire weekend before a single sale.
The numbers: 24 hours, three sales, £34 revenue, minus £12 in listing fees and sample costs. Roughly £0.90/hour. Brutal. But this is the only hustle where the assets keep working — those three listings will hopefully sell for months. As a six-month play, it might work. As a 30-day experiment, it's a lesson in delayed gratification.
The Ranked Verdict
| Rank | Hustle | Hourly Rate (after costs) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Domestic cleaning | ~£17.40 | Underrated king — boring and brilliant |
| 2 | Food delivery (peak hours only) | ~£13.60 | Good cash, zero future |
| 3 | Dog walking | ~£11.85 | Solid if you love dogs and mornings |
| 4 | Vinted flipping | ~£6.60 | Month one hurts; month six could sing |
| 5 | Print-on-demand | ~£0.90 | A long game wearing a get-rich-quick mask |
The Real Lesson
The hustles that pay best right now are the ones nobody's making content about. The ones that trend on social media are trending because the creators earn from views, not from the hustle itself.
Pick based on your hourly rate, your schedule and whether you want cash now or assets later. That's the whole formula. Now stop reading and go graft.
