£500 In, £180 Out: Meet the Silent Partners Skimming Your Side Hustle

There's a moment every side hustler knows. You check the numbers at the end of the month, see £500 come in, and feel properly chuffed. Then you look at your actual bank balance and think: hang on, where's it all gone?

It didn't vanish. It was taken. Quietly, in small slices, by what I call the silent partners — the costs that never signed anything with you but take a cut of every pound you earn anyway.

Let's follow one real-ish £500 month through the mincer and see exactly who got what.

The Month That Looked Great on Paper

Say you're doing mobile car valeting on weekends. Bookings via an app, cash occasionally, driving around your town. Ten jobs at £50 a pop. £500 revenue. Lovely.

Here's what actually came out of it:

£75 + £7 + £45 + £40 + £20 = £187 in costs. Your £500 month is actually £313.

And we haven't mentioned tax yet. Once you're past the £1,000 trading allowance, that £313 starts shrinking again. On a realistic marginal rate, you're looking at somewhere around £180–£220 in your actual pocket.

£500 became £180. The silent partners took more than the taxman, more than your landlord, more than anyone — precisely because nobody ever sees their hands.

Why Platforms Are the Greediest Partner

The 15% platform fee is the big one, and it's insidious because it feels like the cost of doing business. It isn't. It's the cost of not doing your own marketing.

That app found you customers, sure. But those customers are yours now — they like you, they book you, they'd book you direct if you gave them a reason. Every repeat customer you funnel back through the platform is money you're handing over for work you've already done.

The fix isn't quitting the platform on day one. It's treating it as a customer-acquisition tool with a built-in expiry date. First booking: pay the 15%. Every booking after: earn the right to say "I do direct bookings too, cheaper for you, better for me." Most customers genuinely don't mind.

The Costs You've Normalised

Fuel and supplies get written off mentally as "just part of it." But normalised costs are where the quiet leaks live:

The One-Evening Audit

Pour a brew, open your bank statements and your last month of bookings, and run these four questions:

1. What did every pound actually cost to earn? Total revenue minus every single outflow — fees, fuel, kit, insurance. Not a guess. Actual numbers. This is your real hourly rate, and it's usually a slap.

2. Which silent partner takes the biggest slice? For most platform-based hustles it's the fee. For mobile trades it's fuel. Rank them. You fix the biggest one first, not the easiest one.

3. Can any of these be negotiated, replaced or removed? Card processing is genuinely negotiable — smaller providers often undercut the big names substantially. Insurance gaps get cheaper once you compare properly. Platform fees shrink the moment you go direct with repeat customers.

4. What would change if you charged 10% more? If your £500 month became £550 and nobody blinked, you've just cancelled out most of the platform fee. Most side hustlers are undercharging out of politeness, not strategy.

Do the Graft, Keep the Graft

Nobody starts a side hustle to hand 60% of it to other people. But that's what happens by default, because the silent partners never send an invoice and never ask nicely — they just deduct.

The good news? They only win while you're not looking. One evening with a spreadsheet and a cuppa, and you know exactly who's taking what. Then you start taking it back: direct bookings, clustered jobs, trade supplies, proper rates.

You did the work. Make sure you're the one who gets paid for it.
