As part of our ongoing research into best practice in livingroof design and installation, we built a series of livingwall modules before engaging with a client in Bristol. We wanted to establish the optimum make up of the system, and the client was keen to fully understand drainage and weight considerations for their new build project.

[From the bottom] Roof slab, protective fleece, EDPM, drainage cell, geotextile, rooting felt, substrate and planting layer.

Due to the restricted nature of the access at the site, we opted for self-contained modular crates for each section of the livingroof. This would allow for the modules to be pre grown, and also allow for easy future maintenance and access to services as required.

Within the modules, a 50mm drainage strip is incorporated with pea gravel.

Drainage holes were drilled to allow the system to free drain once full.

Module after 6 months of growth. Largely succulents, though we tested some tough grasses too.
